What comes next: the future of AI film

If 2026 is the year AI film grew up – what happens tomorrow? Four developments that are already clearly emerging.

Predictions about technology age quickly. But some lines are so clear they're hard to miss. They all amount to the same thing: the distance between an idea and its finished film keeps shrinking – until it almost disappears.

1. Echtzeit-Produktion

Studios are experimenting with "real-time hybrid filmmaking": classic performance capture merges with generative AI, virtual worlds and assets emerge in the moment. Filmmakers change light, set and motion directly – without expensive physical sets, without render pauses. Directing becomes a live act again.

2. Skript-zu-Film

The next logical step after "text-to-shot" is "screenplay-to-film": a whole script translated into coherent, continuous scenes. First approaches already exist; observers expect usable script-to-film tools within a manageable time. This makes the screenplay even more important – not less.

3. Interactive and personalized

AI enables stories that branch in real time: the viewer influences the course, content adapts. Experts expect a multi-billion market for interactive film assets by the 2030s. In places, film shifts from finished work to living system.

4. Das Studio aus einer Person

"The future is one person making a whole film", said the director of an AI film that caused a stir in Cannes. A single person can today generate worlds, characters and effects on a laptop that once demanded teams and millions. The democratization of cinema is no longer a thesis, but practice.

AI becomes a co-author – not a replacement. Taste, attitude and storytelling remain human.

What remains

For all the acceleration, research and industry – right up to analyses by McKinsey – agree on one point: the tools change the how, not the why. A film doesn't move you because it was produced efficiently, but because someone had something to say. Technology expands the possibilities; it doesn't replace the idea.

For us, that's the best news of all. The more powerful the tools, the more valuable what we put at the centre becomes: screenplay, emotion, music, direction. The future of film belongs not to the fastest generators – but to the best stories.
